How to Program a Spectrum Remote to a TV – 2021 Ultimate User Guide

Spectrum cable boxes include an infrared (IR) remote control. The use of the IR remote allows you to change channels on your television from another room in your house by pointing the Spectrum remote at your television and entering the channel number.

However, when you add additional Smart TVs in different rooms after installing your Spectrum service, you cannot access these new televisions with your current set of remotes.

You have two options for controlling multiple TVs with a single set of Spectrum remotes: program one remote to each TV or purchase a universal remote that automatically configures itself for controlling all TVs connected to a particular box.

Programming Spectrum Remote

Programming One Remote

Turn on all televisions that are going to receive signals from one of your Spectrum remotes. Press the “Menu” button on your remote control and scroll down to “Settings.” Highlight “Settings” with the arrow keys, then press “OK.”

Scroll to “Remote Control Setup” using the arrow keys on your remote control. Highlight this option with the arrow keys, then press “OK.”

Highlight “Learn New Device” with the arrow keys, then press the red button on your Spectrum remote. The LED light on top of your box will flash green once per second for five seconds. Ensure that all TVs are set to channel 3 or 4 depending upon how they are connected to their respective boxes (antenna, cable input, or HDMI).

Press each device key you want lit up on your remote control. A green LED light will appear next to every device key you press on your remote control. If your TV is not listed under “TV Brand,” highlight this option and press the red button on your Spectrum remote four times in a row, then point your remote at the TV and press any device button to continue programming the universal commands within your Spectrum box.

Repeat steps 5 through 7 for each additional TV connected to your system. Your remotes should be able to access all of the TVs connected to one box without pressing multiple buttons on each individual remote control.

Purchase a Universal Remote

There are several brands and models of universal remotes available for purchase that can control multiple devices with one small handheld unit; however, they generally cost much more than a Spectrum-branded IR remote. When purchasing one of these remotes, be sure to check what brand names the remote is compatible with before making your purchase.

Program Your Current Remote

Turn on all TVs that you want to control using your Spectrum cable box and its IR blaster. Press the “Menu” button on your current Spectrum cable box’s remote control and scroll down to “Settings.” Highlight “Settings” with the arrow keys, then press “OK.”

Scroll to “Remote Control Setup” using the arrow keys on your Spectrum remote. Highlight this option with the arrow keys, then press “OK.” Scroll down to see a list of devices available for programming into your remote.

Highlight each device key from left to right and press the red button on your Spectrum remote. The LED light on top of your Spectrum cable box will flash for one second, then go dark until you have set up all desired device keys.

Ensure that each device key is assigned a unique label from left to right in order from 1-20. If you label them consecutively from 1-20, they may not work properly when programming the universal remote.

Program Your Universal Remote

Turn on all TVs that you want to control using your new universal remote and its IR blaster. Scroll through the list of devices available for programming into an applicable brand’s universal remote unit until you reach “TV.” Press “Enter,” scroll down if necessary using the arrow buttons until you reach “On,” then press “Enter” again.

Press a device key in order from left to right that you labeled on your Spectrum remote within the previous steps. If there is only one TV available for programming, skip to the next step. Repeat this process for each additional TV connected to your system by pressing another device button from left to right beginning with device number two and ending at device number 20.

Program Your Universal Remote’s Power Key

Scroll through the list of devices available for programming into an applicable brand’s universal remote unit until you reach “TV,” which should be under the first set of vertical blue bars listed in soft buttons 1-4 on most universal remotes. Scroll down using the arrow buttons until you reach “Power,” then press “Enter.” Ensure that this device key is listed as “TV” and not “Power” before continuing with the next step.

Press your power button to ensure it turns on your TV. This must be labeled as a TV command; otherwise, you will lock yourself out of the remote after programming and will need to reprogram all 20 device keys within the universal remote unit.

Scroll up to “Volume Up” using the arrow buttons if available, then press “Enter.” Repeat these steps for volume down by scrolling through available options until you reach volume down, then pressing “Enter.”

If there is no volume up or down option available under any of your devices within a universal remotes list of options, scroll to “TV Settings,” highlight this option with the arrow buttons, then press “Enter.” Scroll to “Sound Mode” using the arrow buttons if available. Ensure that this is set to TV audio before continuing with the next step.

Press your power button using your Spectrum cable box’s infrared blaster. The LED light on top of your cable box should flash for one second, then go dark. Repeat these steps for each additional TV connected to your system by pressing another device button from left to right beginning with device number two and ending at device number 20.

Conclusion:

Programming your Spectrum remote and universal remotes to control multiple TVs is not as tedious as it seems. Simply label each device key from left to right in order beginning with 1-20, program additional TVs using the universal remote’s “TV” option under devices 1-4, and set custom sound modes for each TV (if available).

Programming a single Spectrum remote to turn on all of your TVs simultaneously should only take about five minutes. If you have any questions or encounter difficulties during this process, please leave a comment below. Good luck!
