Samsung N5300 TV Review and Expectations

The Samsung UN32N5300AFXZA is not excellent by any means, but fits some rare niches that other smart TVs do not. Its small size fits the nooks and crannies of the ordinary house while still offering a passable picture quality to its users. The picture is not too bright and does not well replicate the darker blacks of more refined content, but on the counter-tops of kitchens or in bathrooms the subtleties are easy overlooked. My review of the UN32N5300AFXZA often came with an assumption or question about whether or not it would be good for video and unfortunately this smart TV is not. The very high input lag will just be far too noticeable and will likely impact your gaming experience.

Preferred Usage

The Samsung UN32N5300AFXZA comes at a lower cost and with that a stripped down list of uses it can fulfill. So I’d recommend the N5300 for casual uses.

Available Sizes

Similar to the previous M5300, the N5300 comes in one available size. The 32 inch (UN32N5300AFXZA) version.

Picture Value

The struggling contrast ratio and local dimming features really hold back the Samsung UN32N5300AFXZA from delivering the true intent of most content types. Additionally, even though the N5300 does support HDR the picture quality is not quite up to par in a way that brings any real difference to the screen. The biggest success here is the viewing angle of the N5300. At around 55 degrees you’ll be able to share the viewing experience where as most modern smart TVs sit around 20-30 degrees of quality viewing.

Contrast Ratio

  • Contrast Ratio: ~1000 : 1
  • Bottom Line: Poor

There is a bit of a natural catch twenty two here. The IPS panel gives the UN32N5300AFXZA a better viewing angle, but nearly destroys the contrast ratio. Unfortunately that’s exactly what we see here. Dark room viewing is nearly impossible, but with the proper in house lighting, I believe you’ll be alright.

Local Dimming

  • Local Dimming: No
  • Backlight: Direct
  • Bottom Line: Poor

As a cheaper TV for sale, the Samsung N5300 just doesn’t have the more sophisticated features you’d see on a more expensive television set.

Viewing Angle

  • Viewing Angle: ~55 °
  • Bottom Line: Great

As mentioned above, the IPS panel helps to offer a better viewing angle to you on the N5300. Though, with the limited size it’ll be a hard sell to have everyone come stare at a smaller TV!

Input Upscaling

pixel comparisons

  • 480p: Well upscaled.
  • 720p: No issues.
  • 1080p:. Small issues despite good performance overall.
  • 4K: Not supported.
  • Bottom Line: Average

Despite the UN32N5300AFXZA not supported 4K content, the input upscaling performs well in the areas it does support.

Color Gamut

DCI P3 Color Space

  • DCI P3 xy: ~77%
  • DCI P3 uv: ~80%

Rec 2020 Color Space

  • Rec 2020 xy: ~55%
  • Rec 2020 uv: ~60%
  • Wide Color Gamut: No
  • Bottom Line: Average

The color gamut of the Samsung N5300 is good, but nothing impressive. Oddly enough it does support HDR. Though, I would not recommend enabling the settings as there seems to be some trouble with the TVs actual performance when under the HDR load. Additionally, I’d recommend ‘Movie’ or ‘PC‘ mode for the best look of colors on the UN32N5300AFXZA.

Motion Handling

The Samsung N5300 does not have any options for motion interpolation or 24p playback, but its response time is good enough for most types of content. I would have like more features since it uses flickering of the backlight to help smooth motion, but overall the performance is good.

Motion Blur

  • Response Time:~18 ms
  • Bottom Line: Quick

The response time of the Samsung N5300 is quite good considering its lower price.Even despite the small trail from the lower flicker speed.

24p Playback

  • 24pNo
  • 24p via 60pNo
  • 24p via 60iNo
  • Bottom Line: Worst Possible Outcome

The lack of 24p playback really holds the UN32N5300AFXZA back in its overall handling of motion. The native apps are subject judder and that remains true for cable boxes or DVDs/ Blur-rays discs.

Motion Interpolation

  • 30 FPS: No
  • 60 FPS: No
  • Soap Opera Effect: No
  • Bottom Line: Poor

Even though the Samsung N5300 has a 60 Hz refesh rate there are no options to enable or inherent features for motion interpolation.

There is a lack of total inputs on the Samsung N5300 and overall supported resolutions. In addition to that, the input lag is too high for most video games or gamers to make the games fun to play.

All Inputs

  •  HDMI : 2
  • USB : 1
  • Digital Optical Audio Out : 1
  • Component In : 1 (shared)
  • Composite In : 1 (shared)
  • Tuner (Cable/Ant) : 1
  • Ethernet : 1

The biggest issue here is that there will only be two HDMI ports available. This means you’ll have to jockey around devices as the need for HDMI ports are needed on the NU6900.

Supported Resolutions

  • 1080p @ 60Hz @ 4:4:4: Yes
  • 1080p @ 120Hz: No
  • 4k @ 30Hz @ 4:4:4: No
  • 4k @ 60Hz: No
  • 4k @ 60Hz @ 4:4:4: No
  • Bottom Line: 1080p @ 60 Hz Only

With the limited resolution and lower refresh rate, the Samsung N5300 only supports the more common 1080p @ 60 Hz.

VESA Pattern

  • UN32N5300AFXZA: 100 x 100 mm

Input Lag

  • Best Input Lag: ~50 ms
  • Bottom Line: Below Average

The input lag of the N5300 is over double that of other smart TVs with good performance. I would not recommend this for video games with the exception being the most casual ones.

Input Features

  • HDR10: Yes
  • Dolby Vision: No
  • 5.1 ARC Dolby Digital: Yes
  • 5.1 Passthrough ARC DTS: No
  • 5.1 Optical Dolby Digital: Yes
  • 5.1 Optical DTS: No
  • ARC: Yes (HDMI 1)

Passthrough is not supported, but that is excepted of a cheap TV for sale. Though, HDR10 is supported despite how poorly it is implemented.

Smart Features

The Tizen operating system on the Samsung N5300 is basically the same without the more nuanced features of the more robust versions that come with its flagship models. The smart TV apps, remote, and phone apps are also basic in their design.

Operating System

  • Operating System: Tizen 2018
  • Bottom Line: Limited Features and Design

The UN32N5300AFXZA works well throughout most of its interface without too many issues or stuttering, but the full palette of apps or actual options is very limited. Though, you’ll still have WiFi options, downloadable applications, and apps from devices are still castable./vc_cta]

Built-In Ads

  • Ads: Yes
  • Third Party Ads: Yes
  • Opt-Out: No

The Samsung N5300 may have a limited series of features with its Tizen operating system, but there are inherent advertisements that can ruin the fun you might be having. That is also true for third party apps such as YouTube or Hulu.

Review Summary

Sometimes saving money is all that matters and if you're in that boat the Samsung UN32N5300AFXZA isn't a terrible choice. It'll fit small places that other smart TVs won't all while not breaking the bank. The N5300 still offers a decent picture for the size and a series of smart features that, while limited, work wonderfully with only minor issues.
